Hello! My name is Mike Cope, and I draw pictures.
My cartoons & illustrations have been published locally, nationally and internationally in books, magazines, newspapers and websites. As a freelance artist, I currently design cartoon illustrations, comics and animations for a variety of purposes, ranging from commercial advertising to educational entertainment. So, depending on the project, you could call me a cartoonist, an illustrator, an animator, or even an astronaut (in my dreams!).
But I like to consider the majority of my work to be fun and various forms of cartooning.
I also have a passion for teaching. Since 1996, I’ve facilitated hundreds of cartooning & animation workshops to thousands of students ranging from preschoolers and their parents to professional educators. The majority of my workshops are for children ages 7 and up (kids/tweens/teens) and are hosted at public libraries, schools and community centres. Over the past two years, I’ve been honoured to receive arts education grants from the Ontario Arts Council for my “Drawn to Life: Cartoon Animation” workshops, hosted at the District School Board of Niagara’s Walker Living Campus at Woodend Conservation Area, and was nominated for the 2017 Ontario Arts Foundation Artist Educator Award based on the success of my program. I was previously nominated for the 2016 City of Hamilton Arts Award in Arts Education & Community Arts… So, I guess you could also call me an artist educator or teaching artist.
My post-secondary education includes a Combined Honours BA in Multimedia & Anthropology (McMaster University), an Art Fundamentals Certificate (Sheridan College), 2-years of Classical Animation (Sheridan College) and a Bachelor of Education in Communications Technology (Brock University).
I’m a proud member of both the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) and the National Cartoonists Society (NCS)—the world’s largest and most prestigious organization of professional cartoonists.
Sometimes I travel to meet with clients or attend cartooning-related events, but I primarily work out of my home studio in Stoney Creek, Ontario (Canada), where I live with my wife and our two children. So, you could even call me a husband and father.
All that said, if you’d like to send me any questions, comments or project proposals, just call me Mike… Mr. Cope is the guy with grey hairs!
Thanks for your interest in my work,
